Prep Work

PREP WORK

THERE IS SOME PREP WORK THAT NEEDS TO BE DONE BEFORE INSTALLATION OF THE NEW ROOF:

  • Repair Decking - This is the wood that lies between your roof and the inside of your home. It is the framing for where the roof will lay. When a homeowner is experiencing a leaky roof, often times it is because their decking has a hole in it or it has rotted through causing the water to get into the home. This damage can also cause mold to grow in your attic space if is not taken care of and repaired properly.
  • Ice and Water Shield - This is a waterproof roof underlayment membrane developed to protect vulnerable areas on a roof from ice and water damage. The protectors are made with polymer-modified bitumen. We only install on the important areas of a roof. The important areas of a roof can be identified as the areas with leaks caused by missing shingles.
  • Roof Deck Protection - Similar to the ice and water shield, this is put on the whole roof to help shield roof deck from moisture infiltration. It improves the longevity of the roof in addition to the protection from moisture and preventing wind-driven rain from entering the attic space.
  • Starter Strip Shingles - This helps guard against shingle blow-offs. It is placed on the bottom and top of the roof and is secured to the roof to make sure that wind and weather don't blow the shingles off. If shingles are coming off the roof, then your previous installer did not add a starter strip or yours have been compromised. You don't often see these starter strips because they are covered by the shingles themselves.

POST PREP WORK

After these steps have been completed, the shingles are next. The prep work is essential to laying a good foundation for your roof. If these steps are not completed, much like a house without a foundation, your roof will fall apart. Our sales rep will go over the product lines we carry, colors to choose from and qualities that are offered. This is the customizable part and the part of the roof that will be seen.

  • Attic Ventilation - This is placed on the peaks and edges of the roof to help reduce attic moisture and heat. The temperature naturally changes within the home and since heat rises, the hottest place in your home is your attic. The heat causes moisture to evaporate and rise and without proper ventilation, this heat and moisture has nowhere to go. To prevent heat and moisture from being trapped in the attic/roof, we put the ventilation system in place to eliminate the problem of black mold and deterioration of the decking under the roof.
  • Ridge Cap Shingles - This is the finishing touch that helps defend against leaks at the hips and ridges. There are a variety of peaks and turns on a home that causes shingles to lay differently. Without a ridge rap, there would be exposed parts of the materials underneath creating opportunity for leaks and your shingles to start pealing back.

Veteran’s Choice Contracting is proud to have maintained a reputation as the leading exterior remodeling contractor serving homeowners in the Quad Cities. See what our customers have to say about us.
I am very happy with the work done by Shaine and his employees. Our roof was done very quickly, maybe the first one on our street. They did a good job on the siding and windows, and the little stuff (less important) was finally finished too. The staff was always polite, helpful and responsive. I am happy we choose them among so many vying for our business after the storm.

We had Veterans Choice Contracting replace our roof. They were very knowledgeable from my call requesting a quote, to Todd doing the estimate, to doing the roof. They did an excellent job with the new roof and site clean up. The 4 men who did the work were very kind and worked efficiently to complete the job. I would highly recommend Veterans Choice Contracting to anyone looking to have a new roof put on.

Had storm damage, came right out with a very detailed estimate and help negotiate with my horrible home insurance. This company cares and you can tell they are military veterans with the integrity they display.
